Geoffrey Hammond is Professor Emeritus at the University of Bath (UK) and was founder Director of its Institute for Sustainable Energy & the Environment (I•SEE). He is a mechanical engineer with a multidisciplinary background, including environmental engineering and business management. Professor Hammond was the co-originator of the 'Inventory of Carbon and Energy' (ICE), now widely used internationally by practitioners for the calculation of the ‘carbon footprints’ for products and in construction. He is the author or co-author of many research papers and is the joint recipient of several prestigious awards for his publications: the Dufton Silver Medal (1984), the George Stephenson Prize (2009), the James Watt Medal (twice; in 2015 and 2021), and the Baker Medal (twice; in 2019 and 2023). Professor Hammond sits on the editorial boards of several archival journals that publish material in the area of energy and the environment [including as Editor-in-Chief of the UK Institution of Civil Engineers’ proceedings journal Energy (2019 onwards)]. He has advised a number of the UK Government’s departments and agencies on issues related to energy and climate change. During 2014-2018 he was founder Convenor of the new British Standards Institution (BSi) ‘Greenhouse Gas’ (GHG) Management Group.
